For the past 11 years the Legatum Institute have produced the Prosperity Index, a report which measures relative prosperity across 149 countries using a range of indicators beyond pure financial including, governance, personal freedom, social capital and safety and security. For the past 6 years New Zealand has topped the index but was beaten into second place by Norway in 2017.
2017 Prosperity Index
Stephen Brien’s work at the Legatum Institute focuses on the socio-economic drivers of prosperity. He also leads the Institute’s Centre for Metrics, which hosts the Prosperity Index, and other UK and international social and economic metrics. Since 2015, Stephen has been a Senior Advisor to the Saudi Minister for Economy and Planning. He has been a Director at Social Finance; and he also advised the UK Department for Work and Pensions from 2010 to 2013. Prior to joining DWP, Stephen spent 15 years at Oliver Wyman, where he was a Partner, and served a term as the head of its London Office. He is a board member of the Centre for Social Justice and also of Social Finance Digital Labs, and a member of the UK Social Metrics Commission. He is the author of Dynamic Benefits (the blueprint for Universal Credit) and Outcome-based Government.
